Slow Down and Move Over When Approaching Stopped Emergency Vehicles

Did you know that the Highway Traffic Act requires all motorists to “Slow down and Move over when Approaching Stopped Emergency Vehicles “?  This legislation has been in effect since 2003, and emergency responders know first hand that few people are aware of it.  We see close calls on a day to day basis.  In recent history, 5 police officers have been struck and killed at the side of the road.  Three of them in Niagara. The Niagara Emergency services have joined together to promote this important project.  Firefighters, Police Officers, Paramedics, Parks Police, MTO officers, and CAA Niagara will be hitting the road to spread the message.  You may have noticed the message boards on the QEW with the move over message.  All agencies will be hitting the streets over the next week, please take a moment to read the information that you receive.  If you see a stopped emergency vehicle, Tow truck, or other service vehicle on the side of the road, please slow down and move over.  We all want to go home at the end of the day safely to our families.

Also, just a quick heads up from a really good source, after the long weekend, the Police will be conducting a very aggressive enforcement campaign.  Violators can be fined up to $ 2,000 and three demerit points.  Please pass on the message !
