Fort Erie and DSBN Begin Planning for Future of Two Vacant DSBN Properties

MEDIA RELEASE (October 25, 2017) The Town of Fort Erie and District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) are working together to prepare for the future of the Crystal Beach Public School and Bertie Public School properties.

Earlier this month, Council approved Staff’s request to initiate an amendment to the Town of Fort Erie Official Plan and Zoning By-law for these two properties owned by the DSBN. The buildings are currently designated as Institutional and have remained vacant since September 2016.

“We believe that the current restrictions on the land would reduce development interest and increase the likelihood that these properties would remain dormant and underutilized,” said Kira Dolch, Associate Director, Planning and Development Services. “We will be proposing that the zoning of these properties be amended to allow for both residential and institutional uses in order to facilitate their development for the highest and best use to the benefit of the Crystal Beach and Ridgeway community.”

An informal open house meeting will be held to gather the views and opinions of neighbourhood residents on the concept plan and proposed amendment to the Official Plan and Zoning By-law in November 2017.

I think that both locations would benefit if more senior housing was developed for our aging communities. There is a lovely apartment building on Farr Avenue that is a great example of what I would like to see built. Thank-you.
