221 Phipps Street gets approval to be recognized as a Heritage Property

January 22, 2019
Monday evening Council passed a By-law that would recognize 221 Phipps Street as a Heritage Property in Fort Erie. The current owner as well as the Municipal Heritage Standing Committee felt that recognizing 221 Phipps Street in the historic Bridgeburg district of Fort Erie would be beneficial in helping to preserve a historic Fort Erie home from 1893. This home was built using local trades and recognizes the significance of its original owner, Charles Vahey, and his work in the development of the town of Bridgeburg. This home is built on an oversized lot which emphasizes the affluence of the village of Victoria (after 1877 it was called International Bridge), was more prosperous and had a greater population than Fort Erie.
