FORT ERIE (February 28, 2020) Thanks to the efforts of many, the Town of Fort Erie has officially taken ownership of the EJ Freeland Community Centre and the Boys and Girls Club will be the new tenant at the Centre starting April 1, 2020.
“We are extremely excited to be partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara to ensure our residents will have continued access to recreational, health and wellness programs at the EJ Freeland Community Centre. As the new owners of the Centre, the Town is committed to working with the Boys and Girls Club and to provide it with the support it needs to implement these programs,” said Mayor Wayne Redekop.
In March 2019, the YMCA of Niagara announced it could no longer afford to continue its membership operations at the EJ Freeland location in the face of increasing financial (capital) pressures and the urgent need to make significant investments in the asset and facility. Following the announcement, the YMCA of Niagara and the Town of Fort Erie negotiated the sale of the EJ Freeland Centre and equipment for $1.
